WHO WE HELP

The transition process is crucial in preparing inmates for re-entry into the outside world and avoiding crime will be a major challenge for inmates because of the obstacles they will face after being released. Because of this, Going Home II plans on targeting incarcerated, soon to be released individuals 18 and older that have an interest in the program and demonstrate a willingness to participate.

Transitioning from a controlled incarceration environment back into society can be a stressful time for inmates. Most inmates lack support of any kind. It is difficult to find a job because of their felony conviction or even because of probation or parole restrictions. Of course, lack of a job leads to not being able to support themselves or their families. Even trying to find housing or any stable place to live is an issue due to lack of funds and DOC regulations prohibit parolees from associating with friends or family members who have criminal convictions.

Along with financial stability and housing needs inmates will face so many other barriers, whether real or perceived. Some of these barriers include broken families, health care, prejudice, stereotypes and for some mental health and substance abuse issues. Even something as trivial as technology can be a major set back.

These barriers/obstacles take there toll on the individual. Their confidence quickly deteriorates and causes them to simply give up and give in to their old behaviors because they feel like there are no other alternatives. As mentioned, some of these behaviors could be committing new crimes or even relapse for individuals with a history of drug and/or alcohol addiction. In any case the whole community suffers along with the families they have left behind.

Going Home II intends to make the transition process as smooth as possible for inmates by providing and opportunity for early intervention and support to prevent the potential return to prison when faced with these barriers and deterrents.
